Overview
Registered in 2012 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Fire Island', 'Tropic Sunset' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its golden yellow leaf centers framed by narrow, dark green margins. The ovate leaves, measuring 6 inches long and 4 inches wide, are moderately wavy and slightly corrugated, with a dull surface above and below. The green margins are flat and approximately 0.25 inches wide, while the reddish petioles provide additional contrast to the yellow-green foliage.
In the Garden
With a mature spread of 36 inches and height of 16 inches, 'Tropic Sunset' forms a dense, mound-like clump at a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial shade to dappled light, where the golden centers remain most vibrant; excessive sun may scorch the thin leaves. This small hosta is well suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings, and pairs effectively with blue-leaved hostas or fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns and heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage, particularly on the tender new foliage.
