Overview

Registered in 2016, *Hosta* 'Transitions' is a large sport derived from a seedling of *H. 'Liberty Bell'* × *H. 'Noah's Ark'* crossed with *H. 'Sea Drift'* (open pollinated). Its most distinctive feature is the gradual mid-season shift of the leaf margin from yellow to a two-tone combination of near-white outer and greenish-yellow inner, accompanied by a grey-green feathered transition zone that interrupts the medium green leaf center.

In the Garden

'Transitions' forms an upright, moderately vigorous clump reaching 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height and 42 inches (106.7 cm) in diameter. Its broadly ovate, lightly twisted and moderately wavy leaves—9.5 inches (24.1 cm) long by 7 inches (17.8 cm) wide with 9 to 10 vein pairs—are well suited to partial shade in typical hosta-growing zones. The plant's substantial size and two-toned margin transition make it effective as a specimen or in mixed shade borders alongside ferns, heucheras, and other medium-to-large hostas.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or repellents.
