Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek (AHS), *Hosta* 'Tossed Salad' is a giant cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. 'Sum and Substance'* (pod parent) and *H. pycnophylla* (pollen parent). Its most distinctive feature is the combination of blue-green leaf centers with medium to dark green margins, a coloration pattern that gives the foliage a variegated, "tossed" appearance.
In the Garden
This upright-growing giant reaches mature dimensions of approximately 30 inches (76 cm) in height and 26 inches (66 cm) in spread, with leaves measuring 11.75 inches (29.8 cm) long and 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-green hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its substantial leaf size and corrugated texture make it a strong specimen plant for woodland gardens or shaded borders.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitoring and protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
