Overview
Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Topaz' is a small, fast-growing cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. 'Neat Splash'* and *H. 'Dorset Blue'*. Its most distinctive feature is the intense blue-green leaf margin, which contrasts with a glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces, giving the foliage a muted, powdery appearance.
In the Garden
'Topaz' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 33 inches (83.8 cm) in diameter, with broadly ovate leaves measuring 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its compact size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as a groundcover in shaded areas. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials complement its blue-green foliage without overwhelming the clump.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While 'Topaz' exhibits vigorous growth, it remains susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
