Overview
Registered in 2013, *Hosta* 'Top Brass' is a large, upright cultivar distinguished by its brassy golden-yellow leaves with heavily rippled, gold margins and prominent lime-green veins. The lance-shaped leaves, measuring up to 13 inches long and 7 inches wide, exhibit a slight gloss on the upper surface and a dull underside, with 9 to 11 vein pairs and a cordate base.
In the Garden
'Top Brass' reaches a mature height of 36 inches and spreads to 28 inches in diameter, with upright scapes rising 40 to 48 inches above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain most vivid, and benefits from consistent moisture in well-drained soil. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials, and its moderate growth rate makes it suitable for border plantings or as a specimen in woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While generally resistant to deer, it may require protection from slugs and snails in damp conditions.
