Year registered2009
Section classIII-3

Overview

Registered in 2009 as a seedling of *Hosta* 'Liberty' with unknown pollen parent, 'Too Darn Hot' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its green leaves with pale yellow, slightly rippled margins and notably striking veins. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 9 inches (22.9 cm) long and 7 inches (17.8 cm) wide, feature a cordate base, 10 vein pairs, and a dull surface on both sides.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a mound-like habit reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or shaded containers. The pale yellow margins and prominent veins provide textural contrast when paired with ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from deer and monitor for slug damage, particularly on the dull-surfaced foliage.
