Overview

Registered in 2003 by P. & J. Ruh, this small blue-green hosta arose from self-pollinated 'Tardiana' seed. 'Tomoko' is distinguished by its compact mound of ovate, slightly rippled leaves with a dull surface, prominent venation, and a lightly corrugated, cupped form.

In the Garden

'Tomoko' reaches 6 inches (15.2 cm) in height and spreads to 15 inches (38.1 cm) in diameter, forming a dense, moderate-growing mound. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage retains color without scorching. Suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders, it pairs well with small ferns, heucheras, or other miniature hostas. Its compact size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Tomoko' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones; monitor and manage as needed.
