Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Krossa Regal' registered in 1995, 'Tom Schmid' is a large, semi-upright cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with broad, pure white margins. The leaf blades are dark green with a glaucous bloom on the underside, and the white margins are slightly rippled, creating a crisp contrast.

In the Garden

'Tom Schmid' reaches a mature size of approximately 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 25 inches (63.5 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the leaf coloration remains most stable, and can be used as a specimen or in mixed borders with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns or astilbes. Its upright leaf habit makes it suitable for mid-border placement.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Tom Schmid' may be susceptible to slug damage, and deer browsing can occur in areas where these animals are present.
