Overview
A medium-sized sport of *Hosta* 'Tokudama', registered in 1987 by F. Maekawa and the American Hosta Society. This cultivar is distinguished by its blue-green leaves with broad, irregular gold margins, a color pattern that contrasts sharply with the solid blue-green of its parent.
In the Garden
Mature plants reach approximately 48 inches (122 cm) in diameter and 17 inches (43 cm) in height, forming a dense, mounded clump. The leaves are 7.75 inches (20 cm) long and 7 inches (18 cm) wide, with 13 pairs of veins and a distinctly puckered, corrugated texture. The scape rises to 25 inches (64 cm) and bears pale lavender flowers in midsummer. This hosta performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain most vibrant; excessive sun may cause marginal scorch. It pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in shaded beds.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor for slug activity on the broad leaves, especially in wet seasons.
