Overview
Registered in 1987 by F. Maekawa and the American Hosta Society, this sport of *Hosta* 'Tokudama' is distinguished by its blue-green leaves with irregular gold margins. The leaf color is described as greenish yellow blue-green, with margins that transition from gold to a lighter greenish yellow.
In the Garden
This medium-sized cultivar forms a compact mound 13 inches (33.0 cm) tall and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, with leaves 7 inches (17.8 cm) long and 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) wide bearing 10 to 13 vein pairs. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green leaf centers and gold margins remain most stable; excessive sun may cause the gold margins to fade or scorch. The low, mounding habit makes it suitable for the front of shade borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen among ferns and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
