Overview
Registered in 1988 by K. Vaughn, this large hosta cultivar is a cross between *H.* 'Golden Waffles' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Polly Bishop' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its broad, green leaves with bright brassy gold margins, a color combination that holds well through the growing season.
In the Garden
'Tijuana Brass' forms a substantial clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter, with individual leaves measuring 10 inches (25.4 cm) long and 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to light shade, where the gold margins remain most vivid, and pairs well with other large-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*. Its size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and may require protection in damp conditions.
