Overview
Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'Tidewater' is a large hybrid derived from *H. kikutii* var. *leuconata* as the pod parent and *H.* 'Elegans' as the pollen parent. The cultivar is distinguished by its intensely blue-green foliage, which carries a pronounced glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces, and its substantial mound-like habit.
In the Garden
'Hosta' Tidewater' reaches a mature diameter of 40 inches (101.6 cm) and a height of 18 inches (45.7 cm), with scapes rising 20 to 36 inches (50.8 to 91.4 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom responsible for its blue coloration is best preserved. The large, ovate leaves with flat margins and rounded bases pair well with ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its moderate growth rate makes it suitable for mid-border positions in woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, glaucous foliage offers moderate resistance to slugs, though monitoring may be necessary in damp conditions; deer may browse the leaves in areas where they are prevalent.
