Overview
Registered in 2007 as an open-pollinated seedling, 'Thunder Boomer' is an F2 cross derived from a very blue *Hosta sieboldiana* and *H. longipes*, with *H.* 'One Man's Treasure' as the pod parent. This large cultivar is visually distinctive for its broad, ovate, blue-green leaves with cordate bases, a heavy glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and lightly rippled, wavy margins.
In the Garden
'Thunder Boomer' forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter. Its large, corrugated leaves—11 inches (27.9 cm) long and 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide—make it suitable as a specimen or accent in partial to full shade. It pairs well with ferns and other shade perennials but is not recommended for containers due to its mature size.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Thunder Boomer' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing; monitor and manage accordingly in typical hosta-growing zones.
