Overview
Registered in 1996 as a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Pin Stripe Sister', 'Thumbelina' is a small hosta cultivar that forms a compact mound of medium green leaves with creamy white margins. The foliage is distinguished by its dull upper surface, slightly shiny underside, and rounded leaf bases, with the white margins measuring approximately 0.38 inches (1.0 cm) wide and exhibiting a slight ripple.
In the Garden
'Thumbelina' reaches a mature diameter of 14 inches (35.6 cm) and a height of 8 inches (20.3 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with other small perennials such as *Heuchera* or ferns. Its moderate growth rate and mound-like habit allow it to integrate easily into mixed shade beds without overwhelming neighboring plants.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Thumbelina' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents or barriers may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
