Overview
Registered in 1994, *Hosta* 'Thor' is a large, variegated cultivar derived from self-pollination of *H. hypoleuca*. Its most distinctive feature is the combination of dark green, slightly rippled leaves with a very shiny upper surface and a dull gray underside, a trait inherited from its parent species.
In the Garden
'Thor' forms a semi-upright clump reaching approximately 24.5 inches (62.2 cm) in diameter and 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its large, cordate leaves make it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders. The light green scapes, which can reach up to 24 inches (61.0 cm), produce flowers in midsummer. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Thor' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
