Overview
Registered in 2001 by Japanese breeder H. Sugita, *Hosta* 'Thomas Jefferson' is a large cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its green leaves with wide, slightly rippled gold margins. The ovate, lightly corrugated leaves measure 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) long by 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) wide, with 15 vein pairs, a cordate base, and a slightly shiny surface on both sides.
In the Garden
Reaching 26 inches (66.0 cm) in height and 43 inches (109.2 cm) in diameter with an upright, moderate growth habit, 'Thomas Jefferson' is suited to partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its large size makes it appropriate as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border, where its gold-margined foliage contrasts well with darker-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*. The pale yellow scapes, 27 to 29 inches (68.6 to 73.7 cm) tall, bear pale lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and manage as needed.
