Overview
Registered in 2002, this large hosta cultivar originated from a cross between a *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict' F-1 seedling (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Maekawa' (pollen parent). 'These Colors Don't Run' is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with gold margins and unstable streaking in shades of medium green, greenish yellow, pale yellow, yellow, and golden yellow.
In the Garden
This upright, moderate-growing cultivar reaches 23 inches (58.4 cm) in height and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter at maturity. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders. Companion plants include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its substantial leaf size and variegation provide strong textural contrast.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
