Overview
Registered in 2001 by Japanese breeder H. Sugita, *Hosta* 'Theodore Roosevelt' is a giant-sized cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its very large, ovate leaves with cordate bases, which are green with yellow-green, slightly rippled gold margins, and for its pale yellow scapes.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 29 inches (73.7 cm) in height and 52 inches (132.1 cm) in diameter at maturity. It is best suited to partial shade, where the bright gold margins contrast well with the dull green leaf centers. Its substantial size makes it appropriate as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders, paired with ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
