Overview
Registered in 1988 by R. Pierson as a sport of *Hosta* 'Fortunei Hyacinthina', 'Thelma M. Pierson' is a large, upright cultivar distinguished by its green leaves with bright yellow, undulated margins. The leaf blades reach 13 inches (33.0 cm) in length and 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) in width, with 8 to 10 vein pairs.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial clump 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter and 21 inches (53.3 cm) in height, making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its upright habit and bold foliage pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The large size precludes container use for most gardeners.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Thelma M. Pierson' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
