Overview

Registered in 2009 by Naylor Creek, this medium-sized hosta emerges in spring with bright yellow leaves that gradually develop green centers and gold margins. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 7 inches long and 5 inches wide, feature 10 to 11 pairs of veins, a dull upper surface, and a slightly shiny underside.

In the Garden

'The Minnesota Mafia' forms a fast-growing, mound-like clump reaching 22 inches in height and 36 inches in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its bright yellow spring foliage is less prone to burning than many gold-margined cultivars. Suitable companions include ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its medium size makes it appropriate for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, though the plant's fast growth rate aids recovery from minor pest damage.
