Overview
Registered in 2002 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Tenryu' is a medium-sized cultivar forming a large, compact clump with upright, moderate growth. It is visually distinctive for its ovate, variegated leaves with light green, slightly rippled margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a dull underside; the leaves are lightly folded, lightly wavy, moderately cupped, and moderately twisted.
In the Garden
'Tenryu' reaches a mature spread of approximately 54 inches (137 cm) and a height of 29 inches (74 cm), with scapes extending 49 to 54.5 inches (124 to 138 cm) tall. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its substantial leaf substance and compact habit make it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in mixed shade beds. Its medium size and good substance allow pairing with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitor and manage as needed in the garden.
