Overview
Registered in 2005 as a sport of an unnamed parent, 'Tears of Joy' is a miniature hosta distinguished by its narrow, lance-shaped leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins and a fast growth rate. The leaves measure 2 inches (5.1 cm) in length and 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) in width, with four vein pairs, a tapered base, and moderate twisting, light folding, and moderate waviness.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a compact mound 4 inches (10.2 cm) tall and 13 inches (33.0 cm) in diameter, suitable for shaded rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a border. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with other miniature perennials such as small ferns or creeping sedums. Its diminutive size makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Tears of Joy' is susceptible to slug damage; monitor regularly and apply control measures as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
