Overview
Registered in 1998, 'Tattoo' is a small sport distinguished by green leaves with gold margins and irregular golden yellow green streaks throughout the blade. The leaf surface is dull on both sides, and the cordate leaf base contributes to the plant's compact, mound-like form.
In the Garden
This small hosta reaches 6 inches (15.2 cm) in height and spreads to 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of a border, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for the genus, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or miniature hostas. Its restrained size and variegated foliage make it a useful accent in shaded troughs or small garden pockets.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Tattoo' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and appropriate barriers or deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
