Overview

Registered in 2000 by P. Ruh from unknown parentage, 'Tattletale Gray' is a large blue-green hosta distinguished by its slightly rippled leaf margins and cordate leaf bases. The cultivar produces leaves 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and 9 inches (22.9 cm) wide with 15 vein pairs, exhibiting a medium blue-green color with a slight sheen on the upper surface and a dull underside.

In the Garden

This slow-growing cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 37 inches (94.0 cm) and height of 28 inches (71.1 cm), with an upright growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-green hostas, which require protection from strong afternoon sun to maintain leaf color. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders, where it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so appropriate management may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
