Overview
Registered in 1990 by Fairway Enterprises, this small hosta cultivar resulted from crossing *Hosta capitata* (pod parent) with *Hosta* 'Ruffles' (pollen parent). 'Tatted Lace' is distinguished by its medium green leaves with many undulating margins, creating a ruffled, lace-like appearance that gives the cultivar its name.
In the Garden
Reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in both height and diameter, 'Tatted Lace' forms a compact, mounded specimen suitable for small garden spaces. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical for hostas, and its small size makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation or rock garden placement. The 6-inch (15.2 cm) long leaves with 8 vein pairs provide textural contrast when paired with finer-textured shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While generally low-maintenance, the undulating leaf margins may be susceptible to slug damage in damp conditions, and standard deer deterrents are recommended where browsing is common.
