Overview
Registered in 2013, this medium-sized cultivar resulted from a cross between *Hosta* 'Powder Puff' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Skylight' (pollen parent). It is distinguished by its intense blue-green foliage, which retains its waxy, glaucous bloom well into July, and by its broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases, flat margins, moderate cupping, and moderate corrugation.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'Tarheel Blue' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It is best suited to partial to full shade, where its blue coloration is most pronounced. Its substantial leaves and compact habit make it an effective groundcover or edging plant, and it pairs well with other shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and deer may occasionally feed on the foliage, the plant's very good substance provides some resistance to damage.
