Sunny Disposition

Hosta "Sunny Disposition" review

One of the very first crosses I made way back in 1991 will be called 'Sunny Disposition'. Actually, you will find it listed as (Mary's) 'Sunny Disposition' in my catalog. Mary is my sister. Although, I am not sure anyone ever referred to her having a sunny disposition :-> (Mary's) 'Sunny Disposition' is a cross between ventricosa and 'Birchwood Parky's Gold'. It retains all the best features of each of its parents. It is a lutescent gold. This means that it emerges as a medium chartreuse green that becomes gold as the season progresses. It has the texture of playing cards (another reason to name it after my sister). It has medium purple flowers fairly early often repeating like BPG. The leaves have a glitter much like a daylilies diamond dusting. It has a good growth rate. Like my sister it needs to be out in the sun. Do not put it in the shade or it will wither. I plan to plant a clump in full sun this summer to see how it does. Since ventricosa is a tetraploid and 'Birchwood Parky's Gold' is a diploid this plant is a triploid. It shows all the characteristics of its ploidy. It seems to set pods and there seems to be plenty of nice fluffy pollen. But, the pollen will not always set a pod and often the pods have those white non-viable seed/wings. Past years notes do not show a decent seedling from this plant.
