Overview
Registered in 2004, 'Dandy Randy' is a large hosta cultivar derived from an F-1 seedling of *Hosta* 'Dorothy Benedict'. It is distinguished by its heavily corrugated, blue-green foliage with dark green, slightly rippled margins, a glaucous bloom on the leaf undersides, and a broadly ovate leaf shape with cordate bases.
In the Garden
'Dandy Randy' forms a substantial, mound-like clump reaching 28 inches (71.1 cm) in height and 52 inches (132.1 cm) in diameter, with a medium-fast growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its deeply corrugated leaves and heavy substance provide textural contrast. The large size makes it appropriate as a specimen or in mixed shade borders; it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, or other broad-leaved perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The heavy leaf substance offers some resistance to slugs, though monitoring may still be necessary in damp conditions; deer may browse the foliage.
