This hardy crab is well know for its nice sized and Safe to eat crab apples. Its leaves are shaped another way than most apples, with leaves that resemble plum leaves. This tree is from Asia with its natural range extending from China to Lapland. Its origin is a bit of mystery whether this is a purely wild tree or an ancient variety bred in ancient Asia, probably in China. DNA say it can be ancient cross of domestic apple and wild Siberian crab apple.
That makes sense since fruits on this tree are between the size of Siberian crabs and brand new apples. The brand new day version of this crab apple has large Safe to eat crabs that are frequently red with green or yellow added in. In size it’s very similar to dolgo crab, though there’s variability, in size, shape and color. This crab apple was once widely cultivated in China before the introduction of large European and western Asia apple varieties.
